Soviet Union (USSR). “Excellent Submariner” Badge, 1950s
The “Excellent Submariner” badge (Russian: Отличный подводник) was instituted on 21 May 1942 as part of a series of proficiency insignia awarded to sailors and NCOs of the Red Fleet during the Great Patriotic War.
Produced in the 1950s.
It was bestowed upon submarine crew members who displayed outstanding skill in submerged manoeuvring and navigation, flawless maintenance of onboard systems, pinpoint accuracy in torpedo launches, efficient execution of covert patrol missions, and personal bravery under submarine-combat conditions. The badge both recognised individual merit and promoted professional excellence in a branch crucial to Soviet naval warfare.
Made of enamelled metal, the badge bears at its top the hammer and sickle. The centre depicts a Soviet submarine; above the scene appears the inscription «Отличный подводник» (“Excellent Submariner”).
