Soviet Union (USSR). “Excellent Torpedo Artificer” Badge, 1943-1945
The “Excellent Torpedo Artificer” badge (Russian: Отличный торпедист) was instituted on 21 May 1942 as part of a series of proficiency insignia awarded to sailors and NCOs of the Red Fleet during the Great Patriotic War.
Badge produced in the 1950s.
It was bestowed upon torpedo-service specialists who displayed outstanding technical skill in maintaining and fine-tuning torpedoes, speed and accuracy in loading and launching, mastery of guidance devices, strict discipline, and personal bravery in naval combat. The badge both recognised individual merit and encouraged professional excellence in a weapon system vital to Soviet surface-ship and submarine warfare.
Made of enamelled metal, the badge bears at its top the hammer and sickle. In the center there is a Soviet torpedo and an anti-ship mine; above the scene is the inscription «Отличный торпедист» (“Excellent Torpedo Artificer”).
