Soviet Union (USSR). M1927 Cavalry Shashka Sabre, manufactured in 1939 (Шашка образца 1927 года)
Soviet cavalry sabre of the shashka type, Model 1927, developed from the 1881 pattern used by the cavalry of the Russian Empire. The hilt features the Soviet hammer and sickle beneath a five-pointed star, together with the letters “СССР”. This model could be fitted with the bayonet used on the Mosin-Nagant rifle, in either the 1891 or 1891/30 version. This example retains the bayonet corresponding to the 1891/30 model.
During the Second World War, Red Army cavalry units continued to use the shashka as a combat weapon. After the war, its use became primarily ceremonial.
The sabre was manufactured in 1939 at the Zlatoust Tool Plant, identified by the initials ZiK (ЗИК), whose emblem appears inside a triangle. This factory produced Soviet shashkas between 1938 and 1944, during the Winter War against Finland and the Second World War. The blade also bears the marking “15кг”, as an indication of the steel’s hardness.
The hilt is made of wood, and the scabbard has a wooden core covered in leather.
Total length: 99.3cm
Length without scabbard: 95cm
Blade length: 80.8cm
