Soviet Union USSR. Order «For Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR», 3rd Class
Serial Number: 5040
The Order «For Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR» (Орден «За службу Родине в Вооружённых Силах СССР») was a Soviet military decoration established on October 28, 1974, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, under the leadership of Leonid Brezhnev. It is notable as the only military order created in the Soviet Union after World War II.
It was awarded to members of the Red Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Air Defense Forces, the Border Troops, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) in recognition of distinguished service to the homeland while serving in the Soviet Armed Forces.
The decoration features a convex eight-pointed star. The vertical and horizontal points are formed by radiant beams, while the diagonal points are smooth and coated in light blue enamel.
Over the enamel appear the upper and lower halves of two crossed missiles. At the center is a five-pointed star placed above a wreath of oak leaves. Surrounding this is a white enamel ring with the inscription «ЗА СЛУЖБУ РОДИНЕ ВС СССР» (“For Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR”), with a golden hammer and sickle at the bottom.
Behind the ring are two silver wings and an anchor, symbolizing the air, land, and naval branches of the military.
