The 1985 version of the Order of the Patriotic War was issued by the Soviet Union on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. This commemorative edition retained the basic design established in 1942: a five-pointed red-enamelled star set over golden or silver rays, with the hammer and sickle in the center and the inscription “Patriotic War.” Unlike the original model—intended to recognize acts of bravery in combat—the 1985 version was awarded broadly to all Soviet veterans of the Second World War, regardless of their previous decorations.
