Soviet Union USSR. Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class, number 190,604.
This is a rare piece manufactured at the Moscow “Platinaprivor” Plant (MZPP) (московском заводе «Платинаприбор» МЗПП) in 1944. Few examples were produced at this plant, and they show certain differences compared to others, such as a small burr on the hammer and sickle, the “Monetny Dvor” mint mark being off-centered, or the serial number engraved somewhat crudely. This is the second variant from the Moscow Platinaprivor Plant.
The enamel is slightly damaged.
The Order of the Patriotic War (Орден Отечественной войны) was a Soviet military decoration instituted on May 20, 1942, during the Second World War, at the height of the German invasion of the USSR. It was the first Soviet order created specifically to recognize combat valor in that conflict, known in the USSR as the Great Patriotic War.
It was awarded in two classes (I and II) to soldiers of the Red Army, the Navy, the NKVD, and partisans, for acts of heroism such as destroying enemy tanks, shooting down aircraft, recovering combat equipment, or successfully leading attacks. Its design features a red enamel star with a golden hammer and sickle over golden rays, accompanied by the inscription “Отечественная война” (“Patriotic War”).
