The Veteran of Labour Medal (Russian: Медаль «Ветеран труда») was instituted on 18 January 1974 to recognize many years of dedicated work and contributions to the development of the Soviet economy, science, culture, education, healthcare, and other fields.
It was awarded to workers, farmers, employees, scientists, and other citizens who had completed long and exemplary careers, usually upon retirement or after fulfilling the eligibility requirements established by Soviet law. With more than 39 million awards, it became one of the most widely awarded medals of the Soviet Union.
