The Veteran of the Armed Forces of the USSR Medal (Russian: Медаль «Ветеран Вооружённых Сил СССР») was instituted on 20 May 1976 to recognize military personnel who had completed 25 years or more of exemplary service in the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union.
It was awarded to officers, warrant officers, NCOs, soldiers and sailors of the Soviet Army, the Soviet Navy, the border troops, the internal troops, and other eligible members of the Soviet armed services. The medal recognized a long military career distinguished by discipline and faithful service.
