Soviet Union USSR. Wooden Cigarette Case Dedicated to Commander Ribchenko Poznansky, 1924.
Since the 19th century, Russia had a strong tradition of crafting personalized wooden items. In the military sphere, it was common to find cigarette cases decorated with political or military symbols, both from the Tsarist period and later from the Soviet era.
This example is dedicated to Commander Ribchenko Poznansky, who died on November 14, 1924, in the newly established Soviet Union. Given his rank and the period, it is likely that he took part in the Russian Revolution and the Russian Civil War. The wooden case features a carved depiction of the hammer and sickle within a star, a Soviet emblem.
