Spain. 25 Years of Peace Medal. Second model.
The «25 Years of Peace Medal» refers to the Cross of the XXV Years of Peace, also known as the «Franco Peace Medal,» a Spanish decoration created by the Franco regime in 1964 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Civil War. It was awarded to military personnel and members of the National Union of Former Combatants, commemorating the country’s prosperity under Franco’s government.
Origin: Created on July 24, 1964, a few months after the request of the National Union of Former Combatants.
Purpose: To commemorate 25 years of peace following the end of the Spanish Civil War and celebrate the supposed prosperity and modernization of the country under the regime.
Design:
Obverse: arms enameled in red, with a white center and the inscription «PAZ 1939-1964,» surrounded by «EN LA GUERRA TU SANGRE – EN LA PAZ TU TRABAJO.»
Reverse: arms enameled in blue, with a white center and the inscription «HONOR AND GLORY TO THE FALLEN AND HEROES,» surrounded by laurel branches and a laurel-decorated helmet.
The ribbon had four stripes from left to right: white, yellow, red, and black, symbolizing peace, the national flag, and mourning for the fallen.
Versions: There were two models, the first a single-piece of low quality, and the second model made of three pieces with fire enamel.
