Spain. Blue Division Medal, German Version of Spanish Manufacture, 1st Model
Blue Division Medal, officially known as the Commemorative Medal for Spanish Volunteers in the Struggle against Bolshevism (Erinnerungsmedaille für die spanischen Freiwilligen im Kampf gegen den Bolschewismus), established on 3 January 1944 by the Third Reich to recognize the Spanish volunteers of the 250th Infantry Division who fought on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. This example corresponds to a Spanish post-war manufactured version, produced as a replacement for veterans who had not received the decoration at the time or had lost their original medal.
This example corresponds to the 1st Spanish-made model, which differs in several details from medals manufactured in Germany during the Third Reich. Among the most distinctive features are the completely smooth German helmet and the ball-shaped upper suspension fitting, characteristics associated with this first Spanish variant. It retains almost all of its original gilt finish, together with the Spanish-style suspension bar on the ribbon.
