Spain. Centenary Medal of the Sieges of Zaragoza in Silver, 1808–1908
This medal commemorates the Sieges of Zaragoza, two sieges endured by the Aragonese city of Zaragoza during the Peninsular War, a conflict that pitted the occupying armies of the First French Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte against Spanish forces loyal to the House of Bourbon.
Created by Royal Decree of 9 July 1908 during the celebration of the Centenary of the Sieges, it specifies:
“Article 1. The Commemorative Medal of the Sieges of Zaragoza, created by the Centenary Committee and struck with a diameter of three centimetres in gold, silver and bronze, is declared an official decoration.
Art. 2. This decoration shall be awarded to the descendants of the heroes of the War of Independence and to all persons who have collaborated in the commemorative celebrations. It shall be granted by the President of the Council of Ministers, upon proposal of the Centenary Committee. Those entitled to wear it may request it before 31 October of the current year if they wish to receive it.
Art. 3. […] The SILVER MEDAL shall be worn by the direct descendants of the other heroes of Independence, all members of the Centennial Grand Board and the Executive Committee of the Exposition; the Chiefs and Officers of the Army or Navy; writers and artists, and public officials of a higher rank than Head of Department […].»
