Spain. Commemorative Medal of the Defence of Bilbao, 1874
The Defence of Bilbao medal was awarded on 17 July 1875, following an order issued on 10 June of the same year. Made of bronze.
The Siege of Bilbao was a battle that took place around Bilbao during the Third Carlist War, between 21 February and 2 May 1874. The Carlist armies of the pretender Carlos María de Borbón attempted to capture the capital of Biscay, as it was vital to the Carlist economy and a symbolic objective for the Carlist movement. The defeat represented a serious setback for Carlos VII and, as in the First Carlist War, it marked a decisive victory for the liberals.
