The Order of Saint Ferdinand was created by the Cortes of Cádiz in 1811, during the Peninsular War, with the aim of ending the proliferation and disparity of decorations granted since the beginning of the conflict.
On August 31, Decree No. LXXXVIII establishing the National Order of Saint Ferdinand was promulgated with the purpose of “stimulating the noble military ardor that produces distinguished acts of war”, that is, to reward distinguished and heroic actions in combat, while also prohibiting the creation of new decorations from that moment on.
