Spain. M26 Spanish Helmet with Brim and White Camouflage Paint
The Model 1926 or M26 «brimmed» helmet was given this designation to distinguish it from the straight-rimmed variant. Despite its designation, production began in 1930, and it was the first regulation steel helmet of the Spanish Army.
The M26 was the main military helmet used during the Spanish Civil War. After the conflict, many examples were reused by the Armed Forces during the post-war period, although this example retains its original components and shows no indications of post-war reuse (neither the post-war khaki colors nor the front loop).
The helmet retains its original liner, consisting of three double black leather tongues. Although damaged, it also retains its original chinstrap. Several markings made by its wearer during the war are present on the interior, probably consisting of his initials.
White camouflage paint was one of the finishes used during the Spanish Civil War. Both sides used the M26 pattern, so based solely on the characteristics of this helmet, it is not possible to determine whether it was used by the Republican People’s Army or by the Nationalist forces.
