Spain. Medal to the Constitutionalists, 1820
During the first stage of the reign of Ferdinand VII of Spain, between 1814 and 1820, the king restored the absolutist system that had existed prior to the constitutional period. In January 1820 an uprising took place and, although this pronunciamiento led by Rafael del Riego did not achieve the necessary success, the government was also unable to suppress it. Shortly afterwards, a series of uprisings that began in Galicia spread throughout Spain.
Ferdinand VII was forced to swear the Constitution in Madrid on 9 March 1820, marking the beginning of the period known as the Liberal Triennium.
This medal was awarded in 1820 during this constitutionalist period.
