The Order of María Isabel Luisa was created by Royal Decree of June 19, 1833 to commemorate the oath of allegiance proclaiming Doña María Isabel Luisa—later Isabella II of Spain—as heir to the throne.
The order was intended to reward military merit and was awarded to First Sergeants, Sergeants, Corporals and Soldiers who, according to the regulations in force, could not receive the Order of Saint Ferdinand due to their rank.
