Spanish Cross of Military Merit with Red Distinction, in the version intended for enlisted personnel, dating from the reign of Alfonso XIII (1886-1931). This decoration was awarded for distinguished merit and actions performed on campaign or in the presence of the enemy.
During this period, Crosses of Military Merit with the Red Distinction were closely associated with Spain’s numerous military operations, particularly the campaigns conducted in North Africa, although this type of military award had already existed for several decades.
This example corresponds to a simplified version intended for enlisted ranks, manufactured from single-colour stamped metal without enamel, in contrast to the more elaborate versions produced for other categories.
The centre of the cross displays a circular shield bearing the arms of Castile, León, Aragon and Navarre, with the Bourbon escutcheon and its three fleurs-de-lis at the centre. The upper part of the decoration is surmounted by the Spanish Royal Crown.
