Commemorative medal dedicated to the veterans and fallen members of the Tercio de Requetés de Nuestra Señora de Montserrat, a military unit composed mainly of Catalan Carlist volunteers who fought on the Nationalist side during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939).
The obverse depicts Our Lady of Montserrat, with the mountains and monastery of Montserrat in the background. The reverse features the Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand, referring to the collective military decoration awarded to the unit, surrounded by the inscription “TERCIO DE N.S. DE MONTSERRAT 8-1937 CODO 4-1945”. Ribbon in the colours of the Spanish national flag.
The inscription 8-1937 refers to the fighting at Codo (Zaragoza) on 24–25 August 1937, when a garrison of the Tercio resisted an attack by numerically superior Republican forces, suffering exceptionally heavy casualties.
The date 4-1945 appears to relate to a post-war commemoration or recognition, possibly associated with the presentation of decorations or certificates to surviving veterans and relatives of the fallen. Its precise significance remains to be documented.
Identification: Carlist commemorative medal of the Tercio de Requetés de Nuestra Señora de Montserrat, dedicated to the participants in the Battle of Codo in August 1937, featuring Our Lady of Montserrat, the Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand and a commemorative inscription referring to 1937 and 1945.
