Spain. Spanish University Union (SEU) Cap, Spanish Civil War and Immediate Post-war Period, 1938–1944
Cap of the Spanish University Union (Sindicato Español Universitario – SEU), used during the final years of the Spanish Civil War and the immediate post-war period.
The SEU was founded in 1933 as the university organization of the Falange Española. During the Civil War, its members were organized into Centuries and SEU militias, serving alongside the Falangist militias. After the war, these units became the nucleus of the later University Militias or IPS (Instrucción Premilitar Superior – Higher Premilitary Training).
The SEU militias also helped establish the volunteer structure of the Blue Division, which explains why many Blue Division veterans continued to wear early SEU insignia dating from the pre-University Militias period.
The University Militias were created at the initiative of FET y de las JONS, taking inspiration from the Provisional Lieutenant system developed during the Civil War. Their purpose was to provide junior officers for the Movement’s militias while maintaining an organization independent of direct Army control. From the outset, however, the military authorities opposed the creation of such a parallel command structure, and the University Militias were eventually absorbed into the regular Spanish Army.
