Spanish Officer’s Buckle of the Numancia Dragoon Regiment. Alfonso XIII period, 1909-1931. Complete. Kade by Castells, Barcelona.
On March 30, 1903, the Regiment’s General Staff was based in Barcelona, while the 1st Squadron was located in Vilanova i la Geltrú, the 2nd Squadron in Gerona, the 3rd Squadron in Villafranca, and the 4th Squadron in Vic. In October 1904, the entire Regiment moved to the Alfonso XIII Barracks in Barcelona.
In 1909, the Cavalry Branch was reorganized, reducing the Dragoon Regiments to three: the 9th Santiago, the 10th Montesa, and the 11th Numancia, which formed the 2nd Cavalry Brigade.
Following the events in North Africa, Antonio Maura’s government ordered a mobilization, which included married reservists. This decision sparked strong protests and riots in Barcelona. On Sunday, July 18, with the embarkation of troops from the Reus Hunters Battalion at the port, a wave of indignation erupted, leading to serious clashes. The general strike called for July 26 led to riots throughout the city, spreading to other parts of Catalonia between July 26 and August 2, 1909, events known as the Tragic Week.
The Numancia Regiment left its garrison to quell the riots in Barcelona and other towns such as Manresa.
The Regiment also participated in restoring public order during the general strikes of August 1917 and 1920.
Following the Annual Disaster in 1921, the mobilization of second- and third-year reservists was ordered, completing the Regiment to «war footing» in preparation for supporting the Expeditionary Army in Africa. This situation continued until 1924.
On March 12, 1923, the Expeditionary Squadron, consisting of the 1st Squadron and some personnel from the 2nd, departed for Ceuta under the command of Commander Arturo González Fraile. They arrived in Seville on March 15, with a force of 176 men and 170 horses, where they embarked. The squadron was assigned to the Tetouan sector to perform escort and protection duties for convoys and roads in the Ben Karrich area. In 1925, they occupied the Menkal Massif in Larache and Zoco-El Had. On November 6, 1925, they delivered their cattle to the Larache Depot and boarded the steamer Isleño, arriving in Barcelona on November 9, where they rejoined the Regiment.
On November 26, 1926, the 4th Cavalry Brigade was created, garrisoned in Barcelona, and which included the three Dragoon Regiments: Santiago, Montesa, and Numancia. The Numancia Regiment had 39 Chiefs and Officers, 512 Troops, and 478 cavalry.
Subsequently, political changes led to the abdication of Alfonso XIII and the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic on April 14, 1931. On July 5, the Numancia Regiment merged with the Santiago Regiment, losing its name and becoming the 9th Hunters Regiment, garrisoned in Barcelona.
