Third Reich Germany. Resettler Identity Document of a Citizen from Neuland (Ukraine, USSR), 1944
The Deutsches Reich Umsiedler-Ausweis (German Reich Resettler Identity Card) was an identification document issued by the authorities of the Third Reich to ethnic Germans (Volksdeutsche) who were relocated or resettled during the Second World War.
This example bears the inscription “nur für das Altreich gültig” (“valid only within the Old Reich”) on the cover, referring to the borders of Germany as they existed before 1938, prior to the Anschluss and the incorporation of the Sudeten territories.
The document belonged to a resident of Neuland, a historical German name used for several small rural settlements (khutors) established by ethnic German colonists within the former Russian Empire and later in Ukraine. The identity card contains the holder’s personal details and photograph.
It is signed and stamped in 1944 by the Einwandererzentralstelle, an SS-controlled agency responsible for registering, classifying, and administering ethnic Germans transferred to the Reich. The EWZ operated under the supervision of the **Sicherheitspolizei und SD and played a role in the regime’s resettlement and Germanization policies.
