Soviet Union USSR. Medal for Courage with Rectangular Suspension, 1943 #239045
The Medal for Courage (Za Otvagu) was established on 17 October 1938 by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. It was regarded as one of the most respected Soviet decorations for enlisted personnel, awarded solely for personal bravery displayed in combat.
The medal was awarded to members of the Red Army, the Soviet Navy, border troops, and forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as civilians who demonstrated exceptional courage in battle against the “enemies of the Socialist Motherland,” in the performance of military duties at great personal risk, or in operations against spies and subversive elements, regardless of rank.
This example bears the serial number 239045 and belongs to the first model with the rectangular suspension block, used during the Second World War.
According to the classification system commonly used by collectors, it is identified as Type 1, Variant 2, Option 4.
The Medal for Courage remains one of the most highly regarded Soviet military awards, as it was granted exclusively for individual acts of bravery in the face of the enemy.
Original Soviet Second World War decoration awarded in 1943.
