Soviet Union USSR. Medal for the Capture of Berlin, Variant 2
The Medal for the Capture of Berlin was established by the Soviet Union to recognize those who participated in the final assault on the capital of Germany during the Battle of Berlin, one of the last and most decisive operations of the Great Patriotic War.
The medal was awarded to members of the Red Army, the Soviet Navy, troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and personnel of the NKVD who took part directly in the “heroic assault and capture” of Berlin. It could also be awarded to commanders and organizers responsible for planning and leading the military operations that resulted in the city’s capture.
This example is a Variant 2, identifiable by its flat suspension loop struck as an integral part of the medal, a manufacturing characteristic found on certain issues of this decoration.
The Medal for the Capture of Berlin remains one of the most iconic Soviet awards of the Second World War, commemorating the final victory over Nazi Germany and the end of the war in Europe.
