Soviet Union USSR. Medal for the Defense of Stalingrad.
The Medal for the Defense of Stalingrad (За оборону Сталинграда) was a Soviet military decoration established on December 22, 1942, by order of Joseph Stalin during the Great Patriotic War (World War II).
It was awarded to all individuals who took part in the defense of the city from July 12 to November 19, 1942—the day the Soviet counteroffensive began, ultimately encircling and defeating the German 6th Army.
Eligible recipients included members of the Red Army, Red Navy, Interior Ministry Troops (MVD), NKVD forces, and civilians who contributed to the defense effort.
In recognition of its resistance, Stalingrad was granted the honorary title of «Hero City.»
The bronze medal features on its obverse a line of advancing soldiers in combat formation, topped with a star and the inscription: «МЕДАЛЬ ЗА ОБОРОНУ СТАЛИНГРАДА» (For the Defense of Stalingrad).
The reverse bears the inscription «ЗА НАШУ СОВЕТСКУЮ РОДИНУ» (For Our Soviet Motherland) beneath the emblem of the hammer and sickle.
