The Order of the Patriotic War (Орден Отечественной войны) was a Soviet military decoration instituted on May 20, 1942, during the Second World War, at the height of the German invasion of the USSR. It was the first Soviet order created specifically to recognize combat bravery during this conflict, known in the USSR as the Great Patriotic War.
It was awarded in two classes (1st and 2nd) to soldiers of the Red Army, the Navy, the NKVD, and partisans for acts of heroism such as destroying enemy tanks, shooting down aircraft, rescuing combat equipment, or successfully leading attacks. Its design features a red enamel star with a gold hammer and sickle over golden rays, accompanied by the inscription “Отечественная война” (“Patriotic War”).
