United Kingdom. British 1939–1945 Star and Africa Star Medal Group with 8th Army (Desert Rats) Ribbon Bar
A British medal group comprising the 1939–1945 Star and the Africa Star, accompanied by their ribbon bar bearing the “8” numeral, identifying service with the 8th Army, better known as the Desert Rats.
The 1939–1945 Star was instituted to recognize operational service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945 in any of the principal theatres of the Second World War.
The Africa Star was awarded to personnel who served in the North African Campaign between 1940 and 1943. The “8” numeral on the ribbon bar denotes service with the 8th Army, the British field army that fought in Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia and became renowned for victories such as the Battle of El Alamein, making it one of the most celebrated formations of the British Army.
