United States. M1905 American bayonet for the M1 Garand and M1903, 1942
U.S. M1905 bayonet from the second production period, intended for use with the M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle and the M1903 and M1903A3 rifles. Although the M1 Garand had been adopted in 1936, a significant part of the U.S. armed forces was still equipped with the M1903 when the United States entered the Second World War. As no new M1905 bayonets had been produced since 1922, production resumed in 1942-1943 to supplement existing stocks. This second production featured simplified construction compared with the earlier examples, with a parkerized finish and synthetic grips.
The blade is marked “O L”, the manufacturer’s mark of Oneida, Ltd., together with “U.S.”, the Ordnance Department shell-and-flame emblem, and the date “1942”. It is accompanied by a U.S. Navy Mark 1 scabbard, whose construction is essentially identical to the M3 scabbard, with the principal difference being its Navy markings. Measurements: 54.9 cm overall; 52.1 cm without scabbard; 40.6 cm blade length.
