United States of America. Knights Templar Masonic sword. 19th century.
Steel blade with a brass hilt and guard.
The pommel is surmounted by a helmet with a plume, a distinctive feature of the Masonic swords of the Knights Templar Commandery.
Its origins date back to the late 18th century. In 1797, the first Knights Templar Encampment was established in Boston, Massachusetts. During the first half of the 19th century, several organisations were formed until the Grand Encampment of the United States was established in 1816 to coordinate all jurisdictions.
Membership was restricted to men who were already:
• Master Masons.
• Members of the York Rite.
• Practising Christians, as this is one of the few Masonic bodies that explicitly requires its members to profess the Christian faith.
Unlike Symbolic Freemasonry, the American Knights Templar had a much stronger religious character.
During the 19th century, they became extremely popular. Following the American Civil War (1861–1865), membership grew dramatically, and many politicians, businessmen, and military officers belonged to the organisation.
