United States. WW2 Aerial Gunner Badge
Original Aerial Gunner Badge of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF).
With rear pin fastening and marked “GEMSCO STERLING”. Large model measuring 3 inches (7.6 cm).
The Aerial Gunner Badge was a military insignia of the United States Army Air Forces created in 1943 during the World War II to recognize the training and service of aerial gunners, responsible for operating defensive machine guns on bombers. After the creation of the United States Air Force in 1947, the badge remained in use until 1953, when it was replaced by the Aircrew Badge, becoming officially obsolete and prohibited for wear on uniforms from 1955 onward.
The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) was the de facto independent air component of the United States Army between 1941 and 1947, becoming the largest air force in the world during World War II, expanding from 20,000 to nearly 2.4 million personnel.
