Joseph Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, universally known as Joseph Stalin (Gori, December 18, 1878 – Moscow, March 5, 1953), was a Georgian-born Soviet politician, revolutionary, military leader, and general. He played a central role in the history of the Soviet Union, serving as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1952, and as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR from 1941 until his death in 1953. During his rule, he wielded virtually absolute power over the Soviet state.
