Black pilotka-type side cap, a characteristic item of uniform worn by sailors and enlisted personnel of the Soviet Navy.
The pilotka originated from military side caps used in Russia during the early decades of the 20th century. Following the October Revolution of 1917 and the establishment of the Soviet armed forces, this type of cap became part of Soviet military uniform. With various changes in construction and insignia, it remained in use throughout much of the Soviet period.
In the Soviet Navy, the black version was associated with naval uniform and was primarily worn as a service or garrison cap by enlisted personnel. Its black colour, together with the appropriate naval insignia, distinguished it from pilotkas worn by other branches of the Soviet Armed Forces.
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the newly established Navy of the Russian Federation retained many elements of Soviet naval uniform and tradition. Caps of this type therefore continued to be worn during the post-Soviet period.
