Soviet Medal for Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 (Медаль «За победу над Германией в Великой Отечественной войне 1941–1945 гг.»), instituted on 9 May 1945 by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR to commemorate the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany during the Second World War.
The medal was awarded to millions of personnel of the Red Army, Soviet Navy and other formations who participated in the war against Germany, as well as eligible members of Soviet forces and organizations who contributed to the war effort.
The obverse depicts a left-facing portrait of Joseph Stalin, surrounded by the Cyrillic inscriptions “НАШЕ ДЕЛО ПРАВОЕ” (“Our cause is just”) and “МЫ ПОБЕДИЛИ” (“We have won”).
The reverse bears the inscription “ЗА ПОБЕДУ НАД ГЕРМАНИЕЙ” (“For Victory over Germany”), together with the circular legend “В ВЕЛИКОЙ ОТЕЧЕСТВЕННОЙ ВОЙНЕ 1941–1945 гг.” (“In the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945”) and a five-pointed star.
The medal is made of brass and suspended from a Soviet pentagonal mount with alternating black and orange stripes, representing the colours of the Saint George ribbon.
This example is described as Variant 2, one of the manufacturing and mounting variations associated with this decoration.
