Vietnam. Commemorative Medal of the 223rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment
Commemorative medal dedicated to the 223rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment (Vietnamese: Trung đoàn Pháo phòng không 223), an anti-aircraft artillery unit of the People’s Army of Vietnam. The medal bears the inscription TRUNG ĐOÀN PHÁO PHÒNG KHÔNG 223, “223rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment,” on the upper section, while the lower section displays the date 24 • 5 • 1972, associated with the Vietnamese air-defence resistance against the American bombing campaign of 1972. The date is presented as a commemorative element connected with the unit’s history.
The 223rd Regiment took part in the air-defence operations over North Vietnam during 1972 and, during Operation Linebacker II in December of that year, elements of its forces contributed to the air-defence network protecting surface-to-air missile positions and other military objectives against American air attacks on Hanoi and other areas of North Vietnam. Following the reorganization of the air-defence forces in 1973, the 223rd Regiment became part of the 673rd Air Defence Division (Sư đoàn Phòng không 673), deployed on the Trị–Thiên front. The formation continued to participate in the final operations of the war and in the 1975 offensive. The unit’s military tradition was subsequently associated with the 673rd Air Defence Brigade (Lữ đoàn Phòng không 673).
