Japanese Wakizashi from the Edo Period, 18th or 19th century.
The wakizashi is how the katana or Japanese sword is known with a nagasa (blade) of 1 to 2 shaku (1 shaku is approximately 30.3 cm). The total size is 66 cm and the nagasa 48 cm.
This wakizashi has a marked tsuba (guard) and two seppa. The tsuka (handle) is composed of the same (ray skin), the ito (braided) of origin and two menuki (ornamental pieces) that represent a mythological animal. Both the fuchi (metal piece above the tsuba) and the kashira (top cap) are oramented. Two mekugi stand out to cover the holes that fit the tsuka with the blade.
It does not have a saya (scabbard).
