Western Sahara. Polisario Front badge
The Polisario Front (Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el Hamra and Rio de Oro) is a political and military movement founded in 1973 with the aim of achieving the independence of Western Sahara, then under Spanish colonial rule. After Spain’s withdrawal in 1975 and the Madrid Accords, Morocco and Mauritania occupied the territory, which triggered an armed conflict. The Polisario proclaimed the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in 1976 and, with Algeria’s support, launched a war against Morocco and Mauritania; the latter withdrew in 1979, but Morocco maintained control of most of the territory.
