The flag of Japan, officially known as Nisshōki (“rising sun flag”), and more commonly called Hinomaru (“circle of the sun”), was the national flag of the Empire of Japan since the Meiji Restoration, although it was already used during the Edo period by various Samurai families.
It retains part of the corner reinforcement made of leather.
