Germany, Third Reich. Cavalry or Reconnaissance collar tab for Enlisted Men or NCOs, on dark green wool
Model 1935 (M35) collar tab featuring a central dark green stripe and two golden yellow side stripes representing Cavalry or Reconnaissance troops. Mounted on a dark green wool rectangle.
The collar tabs of the Wehrmacht (Kragenspiegel) provided information about the wearer’s rank and branch of service. Regarding collar tabs for enlisted personnel, a 1935 decree established that they were to have a central dark green stripe and two side stripes in the branch color (M35 collar tabs), mounted on a dark green rectangular backing.
In 1938, another decree eliminated the colored side stripes and stipulated that all three stripes be dark green (M38 collar tabs). Finally, in May 1940, a further decree ordered that the three stripes be brown and the backing field gray (M40 collar tabs). Nevertheless, throughout the Second World War, all three types of collar tabs coexisted on various uniforms.
