Germany Third Reich. Waffen-SS Shoulder Boards for Infantry SS-Obersturmführer .
Officer shoulder board of the Waffen-SS for the rank of SS-Obersturmführer (First Lieutenant), in the white and black branch colors corresponding to SS Infantry. The piece includes the original uniform button.
These officer shoulder boards were manufactured with the so-called “Russian braid” (Russische Flechtung), consisting of braided aluminum wire. At the outbreak of the Second World War, matte grey aluminum thread without shine began to be used instead of the earlier bright aluminum finish.
Within the German armed forces system — including the Wehrmacht — shoulder boards (Schulterstücke) indicated both the rank and the branch of service of the wearer. In the Waffen-SS, officer shoulder boards followed a similar structural system, though with distinctive SS branch color combinations.
