Original leather Pickelhaube helmet from the Imperial German period before World War I for fire officers of the Grand Duchy of Hesse.
19th-century German fire helmet from World War I.
The central plate shows a «two-tailed lion» within a central oval, which is surrounded by an elegant decorative motif of «oak leaves and acorns». At the upper ends of the oval protrude axe heads typical of firefighters, and just above is a firefighter’s helmet with an F on the front. At the bottom of the shield is a scroll with the motto of the German firefighters: GOTT ZUR EHR, DEM NÄCHSTEN ZUR WEHR, which can be translated as: «Honor to God, protection to the neighbor (against fire)».
