Commemorative Medal for the 1300th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Bulgarian State, an official decoration instituted in 1981 during the period of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria to commemorate thirteen centuries of Bulgarian statehood, traditionally dated from the foundation of the First Bulgarian State in 681.
The medal features a stylized relief representation of a horseman inspired by the famous Madara Rider, an early medieval Bulgarian monument carved directly into the rock and regarded as one of the country’s most representative historical symbols.
The medal is suspended from a Soviet-style ribbon, mounted on a rectangular or pentagonal suspension, with vertical stripes in white, green and red, the colours of the Bulgarian national flag.
This commemorative decoration was awarded to distinguished Bulgarian citizens and foreigners in recognition of their merits and their association with the celebrations marking the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian State.
