Bulgaria. Medal for Combat Merit
The Medal for Combat Merit (Медал „За боева заслуга“) was established on 13 December 1950 by the People’s Republic of Bulgaria. It was awarded to personnel of the Bulgarian People’s Army, Construction and Transport Troops, the Ministry of the Interior, and volunteer detachments for initiative and bravery in peacetime or wartime, particularly in combat operations, border protection, and the defence of the country’s independence and security. It could also recognise acts of courage during firefighting. It was discontinued in 1991.
The medal is circular, made of yellow-coloured metal, and has a raised rim. The obverse depicts a uniformed soldier wearing a helmet, holding a submachine gun and preparing to throw a hand grenade, surrounded by a wreath of wheat ears. A five-pointed star appears above the figure. The reverse features another raised five-pointed star and the Bulgarian inscription „ЗА БОЕВА ЗАСЛУГА“ (“For Combat Merit”). It is suspended from a dark red ribbon with a light blue stripe down the centre.
